Retailers angered over Easter trading decision

The NSW Government’s refusal to allow major retailers to trade on Easter Sunday has industry groups up in arms, with the Director of the Sydney Chamber of Commerce, Patricia Forsythe angered that struggling families will not be given the opportunity to earn an extra bit of cash over the Easter break.

“Many employees would be grateful of an extra shift at a time when family budgets are under pressure,” said Ms Forsythe.

The decision has also come under fire from the Australian National Retailers Association, with CEO Margy Osmond believing the decision highlights the inconsistencies of State trading hours legislation.

“Retailers respect that many people in the community do not wish to shop on Easter Sunday.  That’s their choice. But there are many people who do and it seems strange that NSW legislation allows some businesses to open while closing others.”

Smaller retailers such as pharmacies, newsagencies and restaurants have been granted permission to open on Easter Sunday, but the major retailers have been denied.

Osmond believes the same rules should apply to all retailers, regardless of size.
