A new business incubator has launched in Sydney with a specific focus on supporting female entrepreneurs in the marketing and communications sector.
Muir Ventures, founded by Sophie Muir, who previously established Maven PR and serves as Managing Director of The Atticism, aims to address the ongoing underrepresentation of women in agency leadership roles.
The venture will provide funding, mentorship, and resources to help founders either launch new agencies or scale existing operations across various marketing disciplines including public relations, social media, influencer marketing, content production, and advertising.
Addressing industry gaps
According to Muir, the initiative responds to persistent challenges around female representation in senior marketing roles and wage disparities that continue to affect the industry.
“Muir Ventures believes in the massive potential of Australia’s female marketing entrepreneurs and has been created to support them to launch and grow their agencies. Women have been historically under-represented at leadership levels in business, so Muir Ventures seeks to address this,” she said.
“We want to see more women at the helm of agencies, owning their impact, shaping culture, and running high-performance businesses that reflect their values and their vision. As we know, the gender pay gap is still alive and well in many agencies, so many women are going out on their own to address their own earning potential. This isn’t just about fixing a gap. It’s about fuelling an industry-wide evolution led by women.”
Four-Tiered Support Structure
Muir Ventures offers targeted programs designed for different stages of business development:
- Agency Builder focuses on launching new marketing and communications agencies from the ground up.
- Momentum supports the scaling and expansion of existing agencies looking to grow their operations.
- Mentorship & Advisory provides one-on-one strategic guidance throughout the entrepreneurial journey.
- Turnaround & Transformation assists agencies facing operational challenges or requiring strategic reinvention.
The organization plans to work with 10-12 agencies annually, emphasizing long-term sustainability, profitability, and leadership development rather than rapid expansion.
Broader Industry Impact
The launch comes as the marketing and communications sector continues to grapple with representation issues at executive levels. Industry data consistently shows women remain underrepresented in senior agency roles despite comprising a significant portion of the workforce at entry and mid-levels.
Muir Ventures will actively headhunt talent while also accepting applications from female entrepreneurs seeking support for their agency ambitions.
The initiative represents a targeted approach to addressing structural challenges in the marketing industry, focusing specifically on providing the capital, expertise, and networks typically required for successful agency establishment and growth.
