A new study has found that employers are placing more emphasis on looks than qualifications when it comes to hiring potential employees.
A University of Sydney study of nearly 200 fashion and jewellery retailers has revealed “lookism” is rife in the industry, with 84 percent of respondents claiming they rely on those who had the “right appearance” when hiring, while only 44 percent took into account the prospective employees qualifications.
Survey co-author and senior lecturer in work and organisational studies at the University of Sydney Diane van den Broek said the findings suggest “beauty is big business.”
