There’s been a lot of talk lately about how big energy bills are eating up profits for businesses, however it’s easy to implement energy-efficient solutions.

Here are five tips on how businesses can save between 25 to 40 percent on energy bills:

Shut it down

Make it an office policy that all machines are shut down at the end of the working day. On a Friday afternoon, make sure that all other machinery in an office such as copiers, faxes, shredders and franking machines are down for the weekend. A simple task that can save up to 10 percent on your electricity bill.

Let LED lead the way

LED light fittings are an an easy and cost effective way to reduce energy output! Replace regular halogen and fluro globes with LED fittings. LED fittings last up to 8 times that of halogens and fluros, meaning the replacement costs are lower too.

Separate light switching

How often do you really use your boardroom? And yet, is the light not always turned on in there? I recommend installing separate switches in meeting spaces, so that when they are not being used, the lights are off. This can also apply to offices, kitchen areas and store rooms in a workplace, as these spaces are only occupied between 10-20 percent of a working day.

Set the wheels in motion for motion sensors

Motion sensors are a great and cost effective way to save energy, particularly after hours in an office or retail space. While the working day has extended beyond the 9-5 hours for most businesses, you can be clever in your energy efficiency with making sure that lights are only on in areas which staff are using, particularly after hours. When staff are not using specific areas, the sensors will turn the lights off. As soon as staff move through these areas, the sensors detect movement and turn the lights on. This can reduce energy bills by up to 25 percent across a 12 hour period.

Ambient lighting a mood and bank balance booster

Ambient lighting – use battery powered lamps to light areas rather than using overhead lights. This is relevant in offices where task lamps can be used for desks rather than over head lights, and in retail or cafes, battery powered table lamps can be used for ambience.
