Is Samsung looking to reinvent the flip phone with flexible display?

Based on a patent published by the US Patent and Trademark Office in early July, Samsung could be looking to reinvent the flip phone.

The mobile phone manufacturers are experimenting with a flexible shell and display allowing the device to bend inwards without the use of a joint mechanism.

One of the potential issues with this type of design according to the patent is anticipated to be the strain caused by repeatedly folding the display.

The patent seeks to address the problem of strain by referring to a method of measuring strain in the folded area. Data will be presented on the display allowing the user to “manipulate the foldable display” to release strain and prolong life.

According to the patent, the new model’s flexibility may not be limited to one location and may show images in the folded and unfolded state.
