While Windows 7.0 may be generating a fair amount of hype, businesses are being warned to take care when migrating to any new desktop operating system.
According to specialist project strategists, Australian Project & Consulting Services Pty Ltd (APCS), such an upgrade is often a daunting task, particular for smaller businesses.
Craig Dennis, director of consulting services of APCS, believes there are six critical elements to a successful upgrade: an infrastructure audit, active directory review, deployment method, staff training, testing and project management.
“As migrating to a new operating system is a complex and multi-faceted project, it needs to be supported by experienced project managers who understand the risks and processes and who have the technical background needed,” he said.
It has been noted that Windows 7 seems a lot cleaner to use, with improvements made to the usability, compatibility and security features, helping IT to manage risk while helping employees increase productivity.
However Dennis warns companies that take the plunge to upgrade with no clear strategy in place are at risk of the cost of downtime in terms of idle staff, poor customer service, possible backlogs being created and therefore damage to reputation.
