Taxpayers warned of ‘door knock’ tax scam

The Federal Government has warned taxpayers to be wary of a tax scam involving people posing as officials from the Australian Tax Office.

It says there have been reports of a door-to-door scam where bogus tax officials ask people to sign up to a program in return for reduced taxes.

Assistant Treasurer Nick Sherry has warned taxpayers not to get sucked into the scam.

“When making home visits for any Tax Office or Government initiative, tax officers will always make prior appointments and will show official Tax Office identification on arrival.”

Sherry said under no circumstances should people give any personal information including credit card, banking or super fund details to the fraudsters.
