Industry group dismisses ‘Buy Australia’ campaign

Calls from unions to ‘Buy Australia’ to stem job losses and save what’s left, has been dismissed by industry groups, claiming it won’t stop jobs from being cut.

The Textile, Clothing and Footwear Union has urged the Federal Government to guarantee redundant workers full entitlements and suggested that people buy Australian goods to support local manufacturing. But the move has been slammed by Australian Industry Group chief Heather Ridout believing that the country’s manufacturing sector is too integrated into the global economy and that the campaign would not help to prevent further redundancies.

“I think now the industry is so globally integrated, over 20 per cent of manufacturing production is now exported… whether you’re in Bendigo, whether you are in the Illawarra, they are part of the global supply chain,” Ms Ridout said.

Ms Ridout has said that the best way to protect jobs was to ensure that Australian companies were globally competitive.
