The ever growing hacking community turned their attentions to Facebook yesterday, launching an attack on the social networking site and its 200 million users in an effort to steal passwords and confidential information.
The hackers obtained personal passwords through a “phishing” attack, breaking into members accounts, then sending emails to their contact list urging them to click on links to fake websites designed to look like the Facebook homepage. The friends were then directed to log back in to the site, meaning the hackers were able to obtain their passwords.
Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt would not confirm how many users were victims of the attack but said that they were in the process of cleaning up the damage.
