COSBOA welcome small business workplace amendment

The nation’s peak representative body for small business, the Council of Small Business of Australia (COSBOA) has welcomed the new changes to the Government’s Fair Work Bill in regards to the definition of what constitutes a small business from 15 to 20 full-time staff.

CEO of COSBOA, Jaye Radisich has congratulated Nick Xenophon and Steven Fielding for acting responsibly and putting the interests of small business owners first.

“Under the Xenophon amendment passed by the Senate, employees’ right remain protected and small businesses will have more confidence to be able to hire people at a time when the country’s economic future is uncertain.”

The key changes would see employees in small business (with up to 20 full-time staff) have a minimum employment period of 12 months before a claim can be put through under Fair Work Australia.

Radisich believes that if small businesses apply the “new, simple and clear checklist” that the Government has developed, then the number of unfair dismissal cases will be significantly reduced.

“It is essential that we support small businesses however we can, to support the jobs of nearly four million people employed by small businesses in Australia.”

Radisich said that employers need confidence when they are hiring and assurance that they have the support of the Government.
