Australia’s tech sector urged to shape future in startup muster 2024 survey

Australia’s tech sector is being called upon to participate in the 2024 Startup Muster, an annual survey aimed at mapping the nation’s startup ecosystem.

This year’s survey will focus on the impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) and shifts in the investment landscape on local entrepreneurs.

Despite lacking government backing this year, the industry, including the Australian Computer Society (ACS), has rallied to support the initiative.

Murray Hurps, Managing Director of Startup Muster, emphasized the importance of this year’s survey in continuing a mission that began in 2013. “Startup Muster 2024 continues our mission to measure and publish the progress, challenges, and opportunities within the Australian startup ecosystem. This year, we operate without a major government partner, but the industry has stepped up to ensure this vital work continues,” Hurps said.

With AI driving unprecedented change in global startup ecosystems, Hurps expressed keen interest in understanding how these technologies are transforming Australian startups. He also highlighted the emergence of local strengths in sectors such as climate, manufacturing, agriculture, and health, which the survey will continue to track.

The previous year’s survey saw responses from 1,100 participants, including 585 founders and 322 industry supporters. The 2024 survey, launched just last week, has already received a record number of responses, with over 1,000 questions answered—marking the fastest engagement in the survey’s history.

The survey comes at a critical time, as the Australian startup sector faces a significant slowdown in investment. Hurps underscored the importance of comprehensive data in shaping future decisions for policymakers, investors, and industry leaders. “Good data leads to good decisions. Instead of conducting around thirty different surveys this year, we’ve combined new questions with our historical ones into a single effort,” Hurps explained.

Startup Muster 2024 is working closely with partners including ACS Labs, CommBank, Vanta, Stone & Chalk, CSIRO, UNSW, QUT, and several city councils. Entrepreneurs and startup supporters across Australia are encouraged to contribute to the survey by August 26.

Your time spent on this survey will:

1. Show the great things in Australia’s startup ecosystem, the areas that need improvement, and your opinions on critical policy issues.

2. Simultaneously answer questions from 30 different startup surveys from government and supporters that have been consolidated and combined into Startup Muster 2024.

3. Contribute to a long legacy of Australian ecosystem data. Many of these questions date back to our first survey in 2013, with a similar collection approach, providing an unprecedented picture of how Australia’s startup ecosystem has evolved.

3. Allow you to see comparison charts that show how you compare to others.

4. Give you access to special offers and discounts on completion from our partners.

To participate in the survey, visit StartupMuster.com before August 26.
