Australia in top 10 for online brand attacks

The RSA’s October 2009 Online Fraud Report has revealed Australia continues to rank as one of the top ten countries worldwide to suffer online brand attacks.

The report found the total number of attacks launched in September increased along with a rise in the number of brands targeted. Australia was listed in the top ten, accounting for five percent of all online brand attacks. The report also found phishers often continued to attack brands in the same countries including the US, UK, Spain, South Africa and Australia.

The report also revealed a global increase in man-in-the-browser (MITB) attacks. MITB attacks intercept and manipulate data as it passes over a secure communication between a user and  online application.

RSA said  financial institutions, including those in Australia, are increasingly utilising two-factor authentication for their online banking users, meaning they are at a greater risk of being victim to an MITB attack.
