$43k up for grabs for Australian businesses with bold ideas in health and wellbeing

Taiwan’s global health challenge is back and Australian organisations are being specifically invited to apply before entries close in just weeks.

Australian startups, SMEs, universities, research institutions, government agencies, and not-for-profit organisations have until 5 August to enter a global health innovation competition offering up to US$90,000 in prize funding and direct access to Taiwan’s health and technology ecosystem.

The Go Healthy with Taiwan competition, run by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council on behalf of the Taiwanese Government, is calling for bold ideas that leverage Taiwanese products or services to tackle real-world health and wellbeing challenges. The three focus areas are smart healthcare, sports technology, and cycling innovation.

Three winning teams will each receive US$30,000 in funding to help bring their ideas to life. The top six finalists will be flown to Taiwan to pitch their proposals in person and connect directly with some of Taiwan’s leading health and technology companies. A new addition this year, the Top 20 Mentorship Program, will give finalists structured support to refine their business models, validate market opportunities, and build international partnerships ahead of the final pitch stage.

What the competition is looking for

The competition is open to a deliberately broad range of organisations. Companies, startups, universities, research institutions, government agencies, and not-for-profits are all eligible to apply, making it one of the more inclusive innovation funding opportunities available to Australian organisations right now.

Ideas must incorporate Taiwanese products or services as part of the solution. To help applicants develop strong proposals, participants have access to a network of Taiwanese organisations across the three target sectors. That access is available before submission, giving applicants the opportunity to identify relevant partners and strengthen the commercial and technical foundations of their entry.

The competition launched in Australia last week at HealthHaus in Sydney, with Australian organisations specifically invited to participate ahead of the 5 August deadline.

What previous winners achieved

Last year’s inaugural campaign attracted 638 submissions from 55 countries, a strong signal of both the credibility of the competition and the global appetite for health innovation funding.

The outcomes from that first cohort are already tangible. A Ukrainian winning team used its entire US$30,000 prize to procure Taiwanese medical equipment and donate it to healthcare facilities, reinvesting the award directly into expanding hospital support. Switzerland’s Perovskia formed a research partnership with Everlight Chemical that resulted in a paper published in Nature, with pilot production expected in 2026. In the United States, Ideas Lab collaborated with the Taiwan Institute of Sports Science to deploy AI-powered motion analysis technology, broadening access to professional-grade sports training tools.

These outcomes reflect what the competition is designed to produce: not just funded ideas but working partnerships between Australian and Taiwanese organisations with real commercial and social impact.

Why this matters for Australian innovators

At a time when investment is becoming more selective and funding is flowing to fewer organisations, a competition offering both capital and structured international partnerships is a meaningful opportunity for health and technology focused organisations at any stage.

Taiwan has built a globally recognised ecosystem across smart healthcare, medical devices, and sports technology. For Australian organisations looking to expand internationally or validate their ideas in a new market, access to that network through a structured program carries value well beyond the prize money itself.

The mentorship program introduced this year adds another layer of practical support. Being among the top 20 finalists means dedicated guidance on business model refinement and market validation, support that early-stage organisations often struggle to access outside of expensive advisory relationships or accelerator programs.

The competition is open now and entries close on 5 August 2026. Applications are submitted through the Go Healthy with Taiwan competition page, where full eligibility criteria, sector guidelines, and information on connecting with Taiwanese partner organisations are available.

The top three winning proposals will each receive US$30,000, while the Top 20 finalists will receive personalized mentorship from industry experts. The six finalists will also be invited on a sponsored visit to Taiwan to engage with leading Taiwanese enterprises, experience the country’s health innovation ecosystem firsthand, and compete in the final round.

How to Submit a Proposal

Proposals must be submitted in English and should outline the proposed solution, its expected impact, and how it integrates Taiwanese products, technologies, services, or business models.
